Exploding Bags

With Miss Lieshout today, we got to make plastic bags explode and pop. We created a chemical reaction by mixing baking soda together with vinegar.

Clouds in a Jar

Today we tried to create clouds in a jar. We put warm water in a jar and then put cold ice on the top of the jar. Our experiment didn't work that well. We thought like scientists and asked why? Perhaps it was because the water that we were using was not hot enough!
To create a cloud...

The atmosphere needs three ingredients:

1. warm, moist air
2. cooling (which causes the moisture to lift)
3. cloud condensation nuclei or CNN (a CNN is any tiny solid or liquid found in the atmosphere - usually salt from the ocean, dust or pollution)

Sell-a-book

Don't forget - this week you are to search for your 'favourite' book. You are to choose a small piece of this book (between one to two minutes long) to share with others in the class.

Remember what we have talked about. Your piece should be interesting to listen to. It needs to have places where you can change the expression of your voice (perhaps even vary the speed of your voice and the volume). You need to 'sell' your book to others!

Once you have found your book, bring this to school and Mrs Wood will look at it, and check that you are on the right track.

PLEASE TRY TO HAVE THIS AT SCHOOL BY FRIDAY (27th May).

Fairybread Fun

Today we started a new topic all about writing instructions. We had to write the instructions about how to make fairy bread. We then had to follow these instructions to make our fairy bread. Luckily, most of us had all the steps right, so our fairy bread ended up being delicious!

Wacky Hair Day!

Don't forget that tomorrow (Friday 20th May) is 'Wacky Hair Day.'
The children from the Middle Team are to bring along a non-perishable grocery item, rather than a gold coin. I look forward to seeing your wonderful creations!

Bernard Mangakahia Performance

Today we were treated to a performance from Bernard Mangakahia. He took us on a journey around Polynesia through different dance forms. He also taught us the importance of working hard to reach our goals. Watch the video below to see some of the dances he entertained us with. Or you could go to his website to see more. www.bemana.wix.com/mana

Special Visitors

Today Room 9 and 11 had some very special visitors.
Marjorie (the SPCA Education officer) and her two dogs (Kudos and Ralph) paid us a visit.

Marjorie talked to us about the role of the SPCA and discussed the things that we could do to help animals in need. We got to ask lots of questions, and pat the dogs. They loved meeting us (as you can see in the pictures, they were very relaxed!)

This term we will be learning more about the SPCA and thinking about how we can help them as part of our compassion project for the term.

Following our blog

If you would like to know when a new post has been added to our blog (rather than having to go in to look all of the time), you can place your e-mail address in the box on the right-hand side of this blog. Every time something new is placed on the blog, you will receive an e-mail. Hopefully this way, it will be easier to keep up with what is going on in our classroom.

Don't forget to post comments as well, to let us know that you have seen our work, or to comment on things that you have seen or read.

Dates for your diary!

Here are some important dates for Term Two.

Newsletter Update

Room 9, please note that there were two incorrect dates on the newsletter sent home today. Queen's birthday should read 6th of June (not May) and the class 'Oral Language Competition' should read 7th - 10th of June. My apologies for these errors!

Kid President shares an important message

Our value of the term is Compassion. Today we watched a youtube clip of the Kid President sharing a message about how we can change the world. We discussed the message that he was trying to share with us. Watch this clip and see if you can work out what his important message is!
